Growing Langham Preaching in the South Pacific

Background

The future of the church in the South Pacific depends on the younger generation. However, there is a significant gap in preparing them for leadership and preaching ministries. Several key challenges contribute to this issue:

1. Limited Access to Theological Education

• Many young leaders lack formal theological training due to the unavailability of local institutions, financial constraints, and geographic isolation.
• Theological resources and structured learning opportunities are scarce, making it difficult for aspiring preachers to develop a strong biblical foundation.

2. Dependence on the Older Generation

• Preaching in many South Pacific communities is primarily led by senior church leaders.
• Younger preachers often lack mentorship, training, and opportunities to develop their preaching skills, as leadership transition is not always intentional or structured.
• Traditional hierarchical structures can make it difficult for emerging leaders to step into preaching roles.

3. Lack of Contextualized Training Models

• Existing training models are often not suited to the unique cultural, linguistic, and geographical realities of the South Pacific.
• There is a need for locally adapted preaching training programs that consider oral traditions, communal learning styles, and the integration of biblical teaching with Pacific cultural narratives.

4. The Rise of False Teaching and the Prosperity Gospel

• Many churches in the South Pacific are increasingly influenced by false teachings, particularly the prosperity gospel, which distorts biblical truth by emphasizing material wealth and personal success as signs of God’s favor.
• Without proper biblical training, preachers may unintentionally promote shallow theology, reducing the gospel to motivational speeches rather than Christ-centered, Scripture-based teaching.

To address these challenges, there is an urgent need to develop and implement a structured, accessible, and contextually relevant preaching training model for the younger generation. The Seedbed Langham Preaching initiative can play a key role by:

Purpose

• Equipping Young Preachers – Providing structured training programs that are both theologically rich and practically applicable in local church settings.
• Developing Mentorship Networks – Encouraging experienced preachers to mentor younger leaders, ensuring sustainable leadership development.
• Creating Accessible Training Resources – Producing training materials in local languages and formats that cater to oral learners and diverse educational backgrounds.
• Strengthening Church Leadership – Ensuring that future church leaders are biblically grounded and able to communicate the gospel effectively within their cultural contexts.

Participant

• 25 emerging leaders and preachers from across the South Pacific under 35 years old.
• They must commit to a 2-year program.

Program Overview

Year 1 and 2

• The South Pacific cohort is a two-year equipping and mentoring program that begins with an onsite Langham Preaching training level 1 in 2026.
• After the Langham level 1 training, each participant will work with a mentor to produce 4 sermons per year and record their sermons on video.
• Following this, participants will meet every other month for two years in an online format to continue their development through prayer, skill-building, and collaborative evaluation.
• By the end of the program, the participants will meet again onsite for level 3 and a preaching festival inviting young preachers in the country that hosted the meeting.

First Year

• Called to Preach – Understanding the calling of a preacher.
• Integrity of a Preacher – Living a life that reflects biblical values.
• Spiritual Formation of a Preacher – Strengthening personal devotion and faith.
• Conviction of a Preacher – Developing a strong theological foundation.
• Preaching with Passion and Purpose – Effectively engaging the congregation.
• Preaching in the Digital Era – Opportunities and challenges in online ministry.

Second Year

• Preaching to a Pacific Audience – Contextualizing the message for cultural relevance.
• Preaching for Social Transformation – Addressing social issues through sermons.
• Preaching in Times of Crisis – Addressing suffering and hardship with biblical truth.
• Preaching and the Power of Storytelling – Using narrative and parables to connect with audiences.
• Bridging Generations in Preaching – Building unity and collaboration between younger and older preachers.
• Final Reflection & Celebration – Reviewing lessons learned and commissioning future leaders.

The Impact of Langham Preaching

In 2024, Langham trained 13,951 preachers to clearly, faithfully and relevantly teach God’s Word. The training is practical and multipliable: It works with simple skills practiced and modelled repeatedly so that they can be easily transferable, without requiring many resources.
