Peter* lives in a picturesque but remote town in northern Myanmar with his parents and three siblings. He has been serving at the local church since 2021 as a youth leader and Sunday school teacher. Peter comes from a Christian family and both his parents are deacons at their local church. His father works as a driver, and their family has a subsistence farm.
Having grown up in church, Peter learnt about Jesus from a young age through Sunday school. However, in his teenage years he noticed that many young people who used to attend the church had stopped and instead began indulging in alcohol and visiting prostitutes. He realised that it was because church leaders had only taught the congregation that being a good Christian meant being ‘righteous’, and being righteous meant attending church, praying and reading the Bible regularly. They had neglected to teach and share the word of God or teach the church how to show the love of God to the local community.
Seeing all this, Peter himself became dissatisfied with his own faith. He began to study the Bible deeper to understand God’s purpose for people. Through this, he realised that the main priority in Christian life is to believe in Jesus Christ, and that righteousness only comes through faith in Christ. It did not come through works or people’s efforts. He also learnt that the gospel is for all people no matter their social status (Roman 1:16-17). This new understanding greatly strengthened his faith in Christ.
Currently, Peter is studying at Myanmar Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (MEGST) as a Master of Divinity (MDiv) student. He is grateful for the teaching at MEGST which greatly deepened his understanding of God’s word. After graduation, he hopes to continue serving at his local church, especially in children’s missions. God has placed in his heart a burden for the many poor children who are unable to attend school, and he is praying for opportunities to serve in this area.
