You will meet Mem from Thailand, whose PhD through Laidlaw College explores how Jesus as the Son of God can be more clearly understood and taught within Thai Buddhist culture
Mofreh, who is undertaking PhD study through the University of Otago; and Tukana from Fiji, the Langham Pacific Preaching Coordinator.
Together, they will share first-hand stories of how study, preaching training and faithful leadership are shaping churches and communities in their own contexts.
Alongside several key videos, Russell Thorp, Beacon Partnerships’ Executive Director, will introduce new initiatives being developed with our partners in South East Asia and invite you to join us in a Vision That Multiplies.

Mem Samathimankong

Mem Samathimankong is from Thailand and came to know Christ from a Buddhist background as a teenager. She is currently pursuing a PhD in New Testament at Laidlaw College. Her research focuses on “The Son of God in John’s Gospel” and explores this theme in conversation with Thai Christian understanding of Jesus Christ. Through her study, Mem hopes to help strengthen the church in Thailand by encouraging a deeper and clearer knowledge of Christ and a more firmly rooted Christian faith.
She previously served in a local church and at a Bible college in Chiang Mai, and has experience in Bible translation work for Muslim communities in Southern Thailand. Mem now serves alongside her husband among Thai and Lao communities in Auckland, New Zealand.

My calling is to assist my community in comprehending the Word of God in a suitable manner as an ordained minister in the Coptic Evangelical Presbyterian church of Egypt. This will be achieved through the teaching of the Word of God and Christian Theology at the church, as well as addressing the challenges faced by my community in Egypt through both written works and educational instruction.
I have great expectations that my pursuit of a PhD program at University of Otago will empower me to cultivate robust research and writing abilities, which I can subsequently employ to serve my community through teaching and writing. In our region, there is a substantial need for individuals with this expertise, as we are dedicated to passing on a steadfast Christian faith to the upcoming generations. My primary focus for further studies revolves around exploring ways to assist the Egyptian Evangelical church and community in contemplating issues of identity, boundaries, and mission, particularly through the lens of the New Testament writings, given our status as a religious minority within an Islamic-majority context.
